Hi friends! I’m Dr. Catherine Oseni. I’d like to take you through my journey of how I got into Integrative and functional medicine.
My journey in integrative and functional medicine started at the age of eighteen when I began experiencing excruciating menstrual cycles as well as irregular periods, just twice a year in fact.
After my husband and I married, I went through nine long years of torturous treatments to finally conceive our first child. After having our first child, we wanted to have another baby. We wanted to give him our son a sibling and low and behold I had to go through four more years of torturous treatments and nothing worked. My body went through a complete state of shock.
After so much pain and severe side effects of the medication, as a clinical pharmacist myself, I knew continuing on this way would be too harmful to my body. So we decided to just stop everything and go back to the basics.
By going back to the basics I was able to restore my body. I was able to refuel, recuperate and recover from all the years of the tortures treatments and we were blessed with a beautiful surprise after just four months on resetting my lifestyle to clean, healthy daily living. I was pregnant with twin boys!
After the birth of my twin boys I knew I wanted to explore more than just being a doctor of pharmacy. I enjoyed being a clinical pharmacist and working with people and pursuing my passion in the medical field, but I knew I wanted to pursue more in how to best help people in considering a more natural, holistic approach.
One evening while managing a pharmacy in Georgia, I was speaking to my relief pharmacist, Mr. Jim. He was reading this book and I was curious and asked him what the book was. It was actually a book about herbs. He has studied herbs in China. He said he looks at each herb, all of it’s applications, all the pharmacology and the biochemistry behind each herb. I found that very intriguing.
This experience brought back memories of my childhood and how my mother always used different herbs for us children whether we were sick, had a runny nose or tummy ache or even if we were well and she just wanted to boost our immune system and the flavor of a dish she prepared.
One of the herbs I recall the most was hibiscus. She would make Hibiscus tea from scratch from our garden. This brought me back to my roots of growing up with homeopath parents who really did believe in herbs and the power of nature to help heal you.
So, I’ve combined by professional clinical pharmacy experience with my homeopath background and Integrative and Functional Medicine certifications to best assist my patients find healing, naturally.
